Environmental awareness starts with a decision.

More information does not automatically create a clearer picture. A useful starting point is the decision the information is meant to support.
For Silex, environmental awareness means understanding the conditions around people and operations: weather and natural hazards, local developments, infrastructure, access, and the dependencies that connect them. The purpose is to identify what could affect a specific objective.
1. Define the question and the window
“What is happening in the region?” is broad. “What conditions could affect access to our site over the next two days?” gives an assessment a location, timeframe, and operational purpose. Include the decision owner and when a choice must be made.
2. Map the dependencies
Consider the people, routes, utilities, suppliers, and communications needed to carry out the plan. A development matters when it intersects with one of those dependencies. Keep the assessment focused on those connections.
3. Separate source information from interpretation
Record who reported a condition, when it was reported, and the period it describes. Distinguish a direct observation from a forecast or an unverified account. Then explain your interpretation separately, so the reader can see how the assessment was reached.
4. Say what remains uncertain
Missing information belongs in the brief. If the timing, location, or impact is unclear, state that limitation and explain whether it could change the decision. Confidence should follow the evidence, rather than the urgency of the question.
5. Set a review point
Define what new information would justify revisiting the plan and who will review it. A time for reassessment and a small set of relevant indicators make an assessment easier to act on.
This is a planning framework, not a current hazard assessment. For an active situation, use current official information and the procedures relevant to your location.
